Event Profile: La Vie en Couleur
La Vie en Couleur, the Industry Awards Presentation at the 2014 Catersource and Event Solutions Conference & Tradeshow brought together catering and event professionals for an exciting night of recognition as awards were presented for the Event Solutions Spotlight, Catersource ACE and ICA CATIE Awards. Produced by Robb Thornsberry of Infinity Events, the classically designed Champagne Ballroom of the Paris Hotel in Las Vegas was transformed into a colorful, French-inspired boutique for the grand soiree.
The name of the event and the overall theme of the night was to celebrate our very colorful industry, from the events produced to all the different parties involved. “Given the venue and the importance that color plays in our industry, and life in general, I felt it was a perfect choice,” states Thornsberry. “[After announcing the theme] it was clear to me that lighting would have to play a major role, if not a starring role in order to effectively tell the story.”
Taking inspiration from legendary artist Andy Warhol, Thornsberry pulled together a vibrant design based on three key elements: the design had to make a bold statement while being progressive and exciting; must incorporate a creative use of lighting; and it had to be clean and simplistic because the room was already so busy. “All of the decor elements that were added in were either white or clear so as not to compete with the already existing ornate interior design of the ballroom. The look needed to be avant garde, elegant and edgy all at the same time, using thematic lighting as my paint brush,” states Thornsberry.
“I also decided that rather than try to down play all of the existing chandeliers, I would embrace them and, instead, wash each of them with vibrant colorful lighting. I added even more chandeliers and placed them around the perimeter, projected colorful chandelier gobo projections onto the white drape, and even featured a human fountain complete with a crystal chandelier head dress as a part of her costume.”
No event goes without its challenges, though, and this awards program was no different! “I think the most difficult challenge during the planning process was securing and convincing some of the vendors to agree to take this journey with me and to trust in my vision,” says Thornsberry. Another challenge involved working in Las Vegas, which is a city of unions. “This always presents its own set of challenges as event producers, who are genetically designed as type A control freaks (myself included), suddenly are faced with having very little control over aspects of their events. I like to compare this to two alpha dogs who want to be in charge and must learn to trust and work together in order to achieve the common goal.”
“Setting aside the spectacular performances and how the room looked, I think the most special moments were witnessing just how humbled and emotionally moved some of the winners were in accepting their awards, and how embraced by our industry they felt as demonstrated by their tears of joy. To have been even just a very small part of that moment was a real honor,” recalls Thornsberry.
“Awards events such as this bring some much deserved recognition to an industry that works so hard in creating events that honor the hard work of others. I believe it also elevates the quality and relevance of our industry and forces everyone to step up their game,” states Thornsberry. “In the end, everyone wins. The clients, the event/catering companies involved, and the industry as a whole.” With a great set of vendors behind him and a variety of entertainers that included musical performances, strength acrobatics, and roaming artists, Thornsberry was able to overcome the challenges and give attendees a wonderful night full of celebration before heading home from an inspiring week at the 2014 Conference. All in all, the final product was a beautiful event that honored some of the brightest professionals in our industry.
